Set within the beautifully restored St. Nicholas’ Church of Ireland, the experience follows the River Suir through centuries of life in Carrick-on-Suir — revealing stories of trade and industry, migration and change, and the everyday lives of the people who shaped the town.

Meet Dorothea Herbert

Step into Georgian Carrick-on-Suir and meet Dorothea Herbert through an extraordinary interactive AI experience. Ask her questions, hear her stories and discover the town she knew through the words and observations she left behind.

Born in Carrick-on-Suir in the late eighteenth century, Dorothea was the daughter of the Rector of St Nicholas’ Church and a gifted writer, poet and diarist. Her remarkable writings offer a vivid and deeply personal glimpse into childhood mischief, family life, books, society, fashions, romance, heartbreak and everyday life in the town.

Throughout Tides of Time, Dorothea becomes one of the voices of the experience, appearing through AI and interactive technology to share her reflections on the people, places and stories of Carrick-on-Suir.

This is history you don’t just observe. It’s history you can have a conversation with.

Literary Connections

The Michael Coady Study offers an intimate encounter with the life and work of acclaimed Carrick-on-Suir poet and writer Michael Coady. Step inside a careful reconstruction of his original working room, relocated and reassembled at Tides of Time, complete with the books, photographs and personal objects that surrounded him as he wrote.

Discover Coady’s deep connection to Carrick-on-Suir and the River Suir through his poetry, photography and reflections on the people and everyday life of his hometown. The Study offers a rare glimpse into the creative world of one of Ireland’s distinctive literary voices, celebrating his belief in the power of stories, memory and community.

Sean Kelly: Carrick-on-Suir’s Cycling Legend

Sean Kelly is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s greatest ever sportspeople and one of the finest professional cyclists of his generation. Born and raised near Carrick-on-Suir, Kelly’s rise from rural Tipperary roads to international cycling fame reflected the hardworking spirit of the town shaped by endurance, community and ambition.

During a remarkable career spanning the 1980s and early 1990s, Kelly won one Grand Tour, the 1988 Vuelta a España, and four green jerseys in the Tour de France. His achievements placed Carrick-on-Suir firmly on the world sporting map and inspired generations of cyclists locally and internationally, helping establish the town as one of Ireland’s great cycling strongholds.

The new Tides of Time Bookshop offers a curated collection of books inspired by the history, literature and spirit of Carrick-on-Suir and the hinterlands. Gifts and Tides of Time merchandise is also available.

Visitors will find local history, Irish writing, poetry, folklore, photography, genealogy and heritage titles alongside works connected to the River Suir and the themes explored throughout the visitor experience. Featuring books linked to Dorothea Herbert and Michael Coady, the bookshop invites visitors to continue exploring the stories, voices and traditions that shape this unique river town.

How to Find Us

The Tides of Time Visitor Centre is located in the Heritage Centre, off Main Street, Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary E32 CX60.

We are open from 9am – 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am – 3pm Sunday. Last entry 30 minutes before closing.
