Experience Carrick-on-Suir through memory, story and place

An Immersive Journey through Carrick-on-Suir’s Living History

Tides of Time offers an immersive and interactive journey through the history, voices and landscapes of Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary. Step inside the Tides of Time in the newly restored St. Nicholas’ Church of Ireland building, and encounter a remarkable collection of artefacts, photography and storytelling that reveals how the River Suir shaped the town across centuries.

More than a traditional museum, the experience blends atmosphere, sound, imagery and personal stories to explore themes of trade, migration, industry and everyday life along the river.

Literary Connections

Tides of Time explores the worlds of Dorothea Herbert and Michael Coady through recreated spaces, personal stories and poetic reflections. View the Michael Coady Study, dedicated to the acclaimed local poet and writer Michael Coady. This is a reconstruction of the author’s original working room, which has been carefully relocated and reassembled, offering a rare and intimate connection to one of Ireland’s most important literary voices.

Meet and speak to Dorothea Herbert, one of Tipperary’s forgotten nineteenth-century writers, whose voice is reimagined through innovative interactive technology.

Sean Kelly: Carrick-on-Suir’s Cycling Legend

Sean Kelly is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s greatest ever sportspeople and one of the finest professional cyclists of his generation. Born and raised near Carrick-on-Suir, Kelly’s rise from rural Tipperary roads to international cycling fame reflected the hardworking spirit of the town shaped by endurance, community and ambition.

During a remarkable career spanning the 1980s and early 1990s, Kelly won one Grand Tour, the 1988 Vuelta a España, and four green jerseys in the Tour de France. His achievements placed Carrick-on-Suir firmly on the world sporting map and inspired generations of cyclists locally and internationally, helping establish the town as one of Ireland’s great cycling strongholds.

Corporate Sponsorship Appeal from 1989

When Michael Coady wrote Heritage and Hope in 1982, he imagined St. Nicholas’ Church transformed into a living cultural space — a place of memory, creativity, research, storytelling and community connection. He believed the site could become “the informed setting for a dynamic present and a confident future.”

Today, that vision lives on through the Tides of Time Experience.

The restored church now welcomes visitors into an immersive journey through the people, stories and spirit of Carrick-on-Suir. What began as a hopeful appeal for restoration has evolved into a vibrant heritage destination that honours the town’s past while creating new opportunities for culture, tourism, education and community life.

We’d love to hear from you…
